Sunday Morning Programs.

The Preschool children meet on Sunday morning during the 11:00am Mass in the Assumption BVM School. This is for all children of the parish, no matter which school they will be attending. Basic introductions to the themes of God and love as well as basic prayers are shared with the children through activities, songs and discovery.

The children complete a creative "hands-on" activity to help achieve the goals and objective of that particular week. Parents can use these activities to help explain our faith.

The Assumption Religious Education program acknowledges the important role of parents in properly forming the children in their faith development. Each week there is a Family Time section that summarizes the lesson, offers advice for imparting values to the child, and suggests family activities that reinforce the lesson.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten meets on Sunday morning during the 11:00am Mass over in the Assumption BVM School. This is for all children who turn 5 by November 1, no matter which school they are attending for Kindergarten.

This Christ Our Life kindergarten program is designed "to open children to God's love through a discovery of the many good things he has placed in their world. God Loves Us utilizes children's natural characteristics and human experiences to lead them to an awareness of God's goodness and presence in their everyday lives. They reflect on God's goodness in creation, in the wonder of their own unique selves, and in the love of the people around them.

A simple introduction to the mysteries of faith expressed in the Apostles' Creed is presented to help children grow in understanding and appreciation of God's love for them. They are helped to see themselves as belonging to the Catholic community and are encouraged to make Catholic beliefs and tradition their own. They are led to respond spontaneously and intimately to God in personal prayer and in celebration with others. They are also inspired to express love for God and one another." What is Children's Liturgy of the Word?
Its purpose is twofold: to form children in a quality liturgical experience and to facilitate the proclamation of Scripture into the child's life.

What it is not!
A replacement for religious training.

What are the targeted grade levels?
First Grade through Fifth Grade:
They need to be mature enough for formal worship and be able to comprehend a deeper level of understanding of God's Word. The younger children have the Nursery Program or Sunday School. This is Liturgy; this is not babysitting.

The children will gather with their parents for the opening rite of the Eucharist and remain until after the opening prayer. Then the pastor will give the invitation for the children to come forward. They will process to their separate place of worship. They come back to sit with their families at offertory.

What is Liturgy of the Word with Children?
Liturgy of the Word with children is first and foremost a worship experience. Although liturgy itself always exerts its own proper didactic force (par. 12), Liturgy of the Word with children is not a new or different type of religious education. Nor is it a new Rite. It is a concerned and sensitive way to enable children to participate in the formal worship experience of the community. The celebrations of these liturgies are intended to form children in the liturgical language of the church, to nourish and guide their spiritual growth, and to immerse them in the Word in ways that are understandable to them.

The Directory for Masses with Children which encourages a separate Liturgy of the Word:
..it is necessary to take great care that the children do not feel neglected because of their inability to participate or to understand what happens and what is proclaimed in the celebration…Sometimes, moreover, it will perhaps be appropriate, if the physical arrangements and the circumstances of the community permit, to celebrate the liturgy of the word, including the homily with the children in a separate area that is not too far removed. (par. 17)
